A novel, part contemporary, part historical, which tells the story of Pilar Achahuanco, a 27-year-old Peruvian woman whose village is invaded by the Shining Path. Pilar is all too familiar with such violence; her ancestors were forced to resettle by the Incas, and have a tradition of oral history that has passed from generation to generation since that time. Pilar is in love with Arnie Wolcott, a wildlife biologist with whom she goes to live in Missoula, Montana. Alienated and exiled, Pilar uses her family history as a resource for coping with her responsibilities and her new surroundings.
