Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America's rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair's brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country's most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his "World's Fair Hotel" just ... Show more

This is a fascinating book. Anyone who is interested in the history of the city of Chicago should read it. There is also a lot about the history of America. I highly recommend this book. More

I love books written about this period in time. An enjoyable read, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if my family had lived in Chicago. More

As a history and psychology teacher, this was the best of both worlds. Very easy to get into, couldn't put it down, wonderful details, absolutely absorbing. I really liked the pace and how each chapter switched so you were always wanting more details! This one's a keeper and I'm sure I'll reference ... More

Which of his books is your favorite?

Loved, loved, loved this book. Also read the one about the dust storms and the one about Galveston. This one is by far my favorite.
