Nor were their hopes disappointed, for the following harvest was such an one as they had not seen for many years. Agriculture in Egypt was taken under the especial protection of priests and kings; and as a great portion of the revenues of the latter was derived from a cornrent, they were largely interested in a bountiful harvest. At the winnowing and storing of corn a royal officer was always present with his pen and tablet to take an account of the produce; this was called numbering, and Joseph saw that the king had his proper share of the immense harvest that was gathered in. Besides the corn thus acquired he made large purchases, which he was well able to do, as it was so plentiful that every one was glad to sell. The people themselves did not know of, or did not believe in the years of famine which were to come, or else they were too improvident to provide against them. The Egyptians paid great attention to the storing of their grain. In all the large towns there were immense granaries, generally of arched roofs, where, owing to the dryness of the atmosphere, grain might be preserved for Joseph's Sons. Ill any number of years. The different provincial officers of the nomes had a special charge over the state granaries, and upon the funeral stall (tombstone) of one of these governors he states "that he had laid up corn and food for the wants of seven i. e., many years." Into these granaries in different parts of the country Joseph stored all the grain that he obtained.
