This text is unique in its scope and in-depth content, organisation and approach to the subject matter and features laboratory techniques for the assessment of physical fitness components. The breadth of information presented makes this text an important resource for practitioners, especially those employed in health and fitness settings. For each physical fitness component, a chapter on assessment is followed by a chapter on exercise prescription. This text uses a multi-disciplinary approach that synthesises concepts, principles and theories based on research in exercise physiology, kinesiology, measurement, psychology and nutrition. Pedagogical tools include key questions at the beginning of each chapter, as well as key points, review questions and a list of key terms in the back of the book. These learning aids are included to help identify key terms and concepts to test knowledge and understanding of the material in each chapter.Hide synopsis

"Body composition is a key component of an individual's health and physical fitness profile. As an exercise scientist, it is important to realize that your clients may be overfat even though they do not appear to be overweight. This may be caused by a lack of physical activity. Thus, the body composition assessment should be an integral part of each individual's physical fitness profile regardless of body weight. The average relative body fat (% BF) is 12 % to 15% for college-age men and 22 % to 25 % for college-age women. Using these averages as a reference, the standard for obesity is body fat in excess of 25 % for men and 30 % for women. For optimal fitness, experts recommend body fat levels of 12 % to 18% for men and 16% to 25% for women (Wilmore, 1986). Body fat tends to increase with age (Durnin & Womersley, 1974). This condition, called "creeping obesity, " is produced by a gradual increase in fat weight due to a decline in physical activity levels and a decrease in the resting metabolic rate and caloric needs of the body. Excess fat has little functional significance and may, in fact, reduce the health and physical fitness status of your clients. Some body fat, however, is essential because it serves as an insulator to conserve body heat, a metabolic fuel for the production of energy (ATP), and padding for protection. Minimum fat levels are estimated to be 5 % for men and 15 % for women. Many individuals have more than enough fat stored to meet these needs. Excessive body fat leads to obesity and enhances the risk of developing coronary heart disease. Also, a high percent fat hinders performance in many physical activities, because fat does not contribute to the force production capabilities of the musculoskeletal system. Generally, for most activities, the lower the percent body fat the greater the physical performance potential of the individual, especially for activities requiring strength, muscular endurance, and power (Wilmore, 1976; Wilmore & Haskell, 1972)… ."
