Description:New. What most of us know about Evelyn Underhill is...New. What most of us know about Evelyn Underhill is encapsulated in her now-classic title, Mysticism--the first book to introduce the medieval Catholic mystics to twentieth century Christian Protestants. Interestingly, many of the original (and obscure) texts Underhill dug up for her research were only released in definitive translations after her groundbreaking work on Mysticism. What most of us don't know is that she kept hoards of cats, was an expert bookbinder, loved to go sailing and motorcycle riding with her husband, and experienced profound spiritual struggle following the death of her mother and spiritual director. She never wrote a memoir, so don't get the wrong idea about this current compilation. In fact, writing a memoir probably goes against the very grain of her beliefs on the spiritual life, which she maintains ''does not mean a mere cultivation of one's own soul, poking about our interior premises with a flashlight. '' Instead, Underhill praises ''plain self-forgetfulness'' as ''the greatest of graces. '' All the same, this collection has its place in the strata of Underhill's work. Collected and edited by retired Presbyterian minister and author Bernard Bangley, Radiance brings together selections from Underhill's journals, correspondence, poetry, well-known masterpieces and little-known works (including her early novel, The Gray World). Bangley arranges these excerpts chronologically, and through them the practice of a mystical life gains dimension and heft.
