"Secret courts of faeries roam the earth, filling the air with whispers of stealth that are imperceivable to human ears. That is except for those who have the gift of faery sight. Aislinn has seen them for as long as she can remember. As long as she follows the rules her grandmother taught her, she assumes her life can be as normal as she makes it appear. But Aislinn soon realizes this will be inconceivable, seeing as she is being stalked by two mysterious faeries. Yet their intent, unknowkn to Aislinn, is to find the summer queen of the faery world. Keenan, the summer king, has been searching for his true companion for eternity. Every girl who beleives she is the one must take the winter queen's staff; but if it is not their destiny, winter's chill overcomes them until the next girl falls for Keenan. Donia, the current winter girl, must urge Aislinn not to risk her life for him. At first, Aislinn thinks she can just walk away, but soon learns that she must accept or die. Soon, all traces of what used to be her normal life, like her boyfriend Seth, going to school, and living with her grandmother start to amount to the biggest choice of her life. Authors like Tamora Peirce praise this modern faerie tale, calling it "riveting and dark.",and with good reason. Melissa Marr creates a magical realm in the first of the series, creating a gripping and intense story that will leave you wanting the sequels, Ink Exchange and Fragile Eternity."
"I was really looking forward to this. Faeries? Check. Teen fiction? Check. Love triangle? check. But this book failed miserably in delivering anything more than a lukewarm plot and some vivid imagery.
I really didn't care for the constant mention of Seth's body piercings, what like that's supposed to be the main selling point of the character? It really wasn't and I found it rather pretentious. (And I have a fair few piercings myself)
I didn't bond with the characters, who I thought were very one dimensional. I had little to go on in regards to Aisleen's appearance apart from the fact that she was very pretty. In fact, all the characters are incredibly beautiful, with little else to recommend them.
The plot lacked intrigue, the fairy folklore being plucked straight out of generic mythological tales. Whatever happened to a bit of imagination? It had all the cheese of Twilight without any of the soul and genius.
The length was disappointing (I read it in just under a day) and the pace only picked up in the last few chapters. Even so, it wasn't enough to convince me I wisely parted with £6.99.
Love struck faeries have much potential but instead are horribly abominated in this piece of literary drivel.
Just because it's teen fiction doesn't mean it needs to be bad quality Melissa Marr."

"Really enjoyed this one. Wonderful characters in Aislinn, Seth, Keenan and Donia. I read a couple of reviews that said they didn't feel the humans were as well developed as the faeries, but I don't agree with that. You got more background on the faeries simply because they require explanation where as humans do not. I think the relationship between Ash and Seth was well developed and sweet. I loved that she could see the fae, but had spent her life carefully pretending she couldn't only to be drawn into their world (which wasn't as beautiful and compelling as they are often portrayed). I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. Oh, and gorgeous, gorgeous covers!"
"I can't decide if this just wasn't my kind of thing, or what. I think it's a book that would appeal enormously to teen readers who like slightly dark fantasy with fairies and some romance. For me, the writing just wasn't strong enough to hook me into a topic I'm ambivalent about. I was really intrigued at the beginning - Ash is a fairly strong main character, and there were intriguing hints at her family's past and at the motivations of various fairies. The beginning of her relationship with Seth was nicely swoony, but then he turned into Mr. Perfect and Supportive and I missed the earlier tension (although I hear we get his point of view in a later book and everything isn't so perfect - a fact which convinced me to keep going with this series). Overall, I think the book has a strong hook with interesting characters and plot, but it's not one that I'll rush out and recommend to other adults as a great example of teen literature - but I would definitely recommend it to teen fans of slightly goth fantasy, Twilight, etc. (In one sense this is much better written than Twilight, but for me it lacked that bizarre addictive quality)."
