"I'm in the mood now for a quickie. So here it is.
The Quickie is a strong example of modern pulp in the raw-boned tradition of Mickey Spillane or Raymond Chandler. Snappy dialogue propels a simple plot through a number of twists with a first-person narrator telling her story. Tough stuff. The ultimate resolution seems a tad preposterous but what the heck? Enjoy the ride, toots. You get it all with The Quickie: jealousy, revenge, adultery, a woman scorned, robbery, murder, corrupt cops, good versus evil, sexual antics, short chapters with cliff hangers and lines like "The Times Square neon billboard for trouble came in the form of the twenty-something blonde outside his office on Pearl Street."
If you seek something deeper as you follow heroine Lauren Stillwell through her gender-shifted Mike Hammer routine, ponder the wisdom of the old cliché about deception weaving a tangled web. On this level, The Quickie is reminiscent of James Siegel's thriller Derailed where every attempt at covering up questionable judgment just creates fresh opportunity for more of the same until, eventually, the protagonist is forced to face reality."
"I thought I should read some of James Patterson's books so I started with Honeymoon (his bestseller) and then picked this one as it is his latest. I actually think this one is much better than Honeymoon. I'm not sure I get Patterson's style. His books are very broken up (example this book is only 350 pages but has 116 chapters) but they do go very quick so maybe that's a good thing. The other thing is that in both books I don't like any of his characters, none of them are "good" - even the good guy isn't good so that was really hard for me. The story is great and very twisted which I loved. It's odd but it's almost this love hate thing going on. You love the story, hate the characters but can't stop reading...
So, w/this one we have a married cop w/a cheating husband who thinks she's getting even by having her own affair. Started out pretty simple but then explodes into all kinds of crazy that I can't even explain. If you like twists and turns and books that keep you guessing to the point of just being simply impossible I think Patterson is your guy."
"You may notice a trend in my reviews lately. I keep saying "I just got this book because I needed it for my A to Z Challenge." You may also notice that I have REALLY liked all of them. And this one went way above and beyond.
I have always heard great things about James Patterson, but this is the first one of his that I've picked up.
I knew from the back of the book that cheating was involved and a murder, but I was shocked throughout the entire book how many twists and turns there were. Every time I thought nothing else could happen, another curveball was thrown. There's really not a lot I can say about this book without giving things away, except don't ever think you're in the clear of the drama. It's always around the corner.
One of the things I really liked about this book, and I'm not sure if it rings true for all Patterson books, but they have super short chapters. Most are 2-3 pages. Yes, there are over 100 chapters, but I'm the kind of reader who likes to pop open my book when I have a few minutes here and there. With such short chapters, I was able to knock out a chapter in my couple of minutes and not get stuck in the middle of something huge.
This book is definitely not the normal type of book I read. I am more of a fluff reader, but after this, I'll have to start picking up more of his books. If they're all this drama filled, I'm a lifer
I wish I could just spill all the drama, but I'm not going to. Instead, I am going to give this book 5 bookmarks. Yes, you heard right. There's not one thing I have to complain about this book. Absolutely loved it!"
"James Patterson & Michael Ledwidge came up with the right title for this great book that is entitled The Quickie. They put a twist into the read of Lauren's life as a great wife and detective that one day turns her own life inside out...One Quickie turns into a deadly one that Lauren's husband is left holding the bag and she does everything in her power to save him. The power that Lauren has to save her husband becomes powerless because of the desires, secrets and the consequence that's slowly drowns her.
As I was reading this book the characters came to life and invited me into their world that made me question a lot of things but one thing stood out more than others. "Can love or should I say marriage bring you to a point that you love someone more then you love yourself?" love comes in all forms and fashion but it's a whole different ball game when it has to do with your husband or wife killing someone. "Would you cover up his or her wrongness because you work for the law?" Love is a powerful tool that you never under estimate or say what you will not do in a situation that Lauren finds herself in. Although the book I knew it was wrong what she was doing but I wouldn't want to lose my husband either.
Pick up this book when you get a chance and adventure into the life of Lauren's that will make you go hmmm..."
