About this title: An inventive and original novel from this multi-award-winning author. Lloyd Jones' new novel is set mainly in a small village on Bougainville, a country torn apart by civil war. Mathilda attends the school set up by Mr Watts, the only white man on the island. By his own admission he's not much of a teacher and proceeds to educate the children by ...

"Takes place on a small island off of Papua New Guinea in the early 90's during a period of rebellion. Mr. Pip is a white man teaching native children using Great Expectations as a text book. This is a charming, fascinating, but sometimes violent book."
"An engaging view into another world, one rife with civil war and hardships. This tells it like it is....life can be hard, especially for the innocent children."
"Mister Pip is a finely-crafted story written in a refreshingly modern prose. Lloyd's narrator and protagonist is a thirteen-year-old inhabitant of an unnamed south Pacific island. We meet Matilda when her island is in the midst of what a politician might call a "period of transition." The copper mines have closed and with them the short term of relative prosperity has come to an end. A war is being fought throughout the island and the village men have disappeared into the jungle to join the rebel forces. The routine of daily life slips away as the school closes, the economy dries up, and the village reverts to an essentially agrarian society.
All outsiders have abandoned Matilda's village, save the eccentric Mr. Watts, a tall, white man who lives on the outskirts of town with his wife, Grace, the village outcast. One day, Mr. Watts cleans out the schoolhouse and invites the children back to school. Classes consist of simple lessons in reading, writing, and arithmetic - and Mr. Watts reading aloud from Charles Dickens's Great Expectations. Matilda is swept into the world of Victorian England, a world drastically different than hers, but one she comes to love through Dickens's descriptive prose, the helpful explanations of Mr. Watts, and her own burgeoning imagination.
The story is lovely, but at the same time marked with pain, violence, and horror. Ultimately, Matilda's introduction to literature in Mr. Watt's unusual classroom evokes an emotional, intellectual, and spiritual change that forever alter her life and experience. Like so many stories, Mister Pip is a story about stories and their transformative power. But to his credit, Jones steers clear of cliche, presenting a wholly original and compelling tale."
"Unconvincing narrator, condescending, patronizing, less than successful end. Other than that it's an OK story. Note to middle aged white guys - think twice before writing as 13 year old black island girl."
