"As a collection of essays - most published in various periodicals on both sides of the Atlantic over the past two decades - Judt's latest offering is both hit and miss. He hits it with his provocative insights into the presidencies of JFK and Nixon, and their respective crises. He also provides an adequate - yet perhaps tired at this point in time - rebuttal to the neocon-dominated Bush Administration and its impact (both ineffective and unrealistic) on global politics, a solid critique of both sides of the US versus European debate (as in "Who's likely to dominate culturally, economically, and politically in the twenty-first century?), as well as a detailed analysis of France's inability to respond to the German invasion during WWII (despite having superior technology and weaponry).
However, Judt has his misses - most of which are in the first section of his book, "The Heart of Darkness", as it provides an individual look into the lives of four lesser-known twentieth-century intellectuals (at least to the average American). If you can read past this less-than-brilliant portion, Judt's writing does get better. Of this I can assure you."
"This book mostly dealt with the author complaining about other writers or intellectual individuals of the 20th century. 1st book in a long time that I didn't finish. It may have been OK for the right type of person, but I didn't care for it."
"Call me a dweeb, but few things get me hotter than really smart people talking smartly about books they've read. That's why I loved this collection of book reviews that are really incredibly intelligent essays. Judt speaks knowledgably about a wide range of topics, from Camus to Israel, Primo Levi to JFK. The essays about America were especially good, especially the essay on Whitaker Chambers."
"A great range of topics in modern history and modern intellectual history are covered in these readable essays. The book has a unity of tone and an important underlying theme, best described as a scepticism about claims to 'uniqueness' or 'exceptionalism'. The past is everywhere vividly recalled as a guide to the present."
