"I agree with the overall concept of this book to expect higher standards of teenagers and encourage them to "do hard things." I did not really enjoy reading the book, but I am also not 13-17 years old, which is really the intended audience. I read it with one of the girls in my high school youth group at church and she really liked it a lot.
The boys who wrote the book definitely sound like they grew up in a very conservative, American culture without much exposure to the secular world. Their older brother wrote, I Kissed Dating Goodbye, which was popular when I was in high school. That fact alone was a bit of a turn-off to me before reading the book. Do Hard Things is a little cheesy but I am glad that teenagers are getting something out of it. I guess I'm a little to cynical and jaded. Oh, to be young again."
"This book is a very different book than what I was used to reading when first picked up. I, for some reason, felt drawn to it. I ordered it from Amazon and was absolutely blown away by all the wisdom and truth God revealed to me in this book. I can only wish that it was written earlier in my teen years, so I hadn't wasted a second of it. I was incredibly challenged by this book. It showed me I was entirely too capable of doing hard things in His will, and that He had/has plans for me bigger than I had for myself.
If it weren't for this book, I wouldn't have been challenged to witness. I know friends who either wouldn't have at all or would waste time on being saved simply because I read this book.
If it weren't for this book, I wouldn't have seen that just because of my age, doesn't mean that my passion for God is real and that it can be used like a pen to paper.
I will forever remember this book as the book that led me to God and my future like no other.
I recommend it to everyone I ever meet. Teens AND adults. God doesn't run out of plans for you until the day He says, "Well done, my good and faithful servant." And until than, I shall burn on, and strive for the day I burn out brighter than ever."
"Chuck Norris doesn't sleep. He waits. Chuck Norris entered a staring contest with a statue in 1998. He is still undefeated. Chuck Norris believes it's not butter. He also wrote the forward to this book, which in itself justifies reading it. Also, the authors are the twin younger brothers of Josh Harris, who has been telling me to be wise and fight lust. This book has a heck of a pedigree, and the Harris parents must be superhuman. As for the content of the book: it's good. It functions on the premise that teenagers are capable of much more than they actually do, and that that should not be the case. I wish I'd read this back when I was twelve or so. Even now, a decade later, it was still inspiring. It was the last little shove in the back I needed to pull the trigger with DiscipleMakers. So, it is recommended hard. (Special review love for Dave, who recommended and lent it to me, and also got it out from under my seat in church when I forgot it. Hooray!)"
I could simply leave my review at that - "Amazing!" - because that is the best word I have to sum this book up. But for the sake of getting more people to read this book I will try to give a review.
First I want to say that this book, while written for teens, is good for anyone to read. I highly recommend that parents read this book.
The theme is rebeling against low expectations and doing hard things rather than settle for status quo. I liked the practical application such as: Three Strategies For Stepping Higher 1. Do what's hard for you. 2. Be known for what you do (more than for what you don't). 3. Pursue excellence, not excuses.
And I really enjoyed all the examples of teens who have been and are working on hard things of their own. I think my favorite chapter was chapter 8: "Small Hard Things" where they talked about the fact that hard things are not always big things that everyone sees. Spending a consistent time with God each day is a hard thing. Obeying your parents with a good attitude is a hard thing. The list could go on! And on!
Alex and Brett sum the Rebelution up with 3 things - character, competence, and collaboration. And I will let you READ the book to find out why!
There is more to life than just "floating along" and "hanging out" with friends and this book will encourage and show you how to move beyond the "average" life.
Now, do a hard thing and block off some time to read this book!"
