"Wanted this to be so much more than it was. The plot was what you would expect from a teen vampire novel but still didn't satisfy me. I have struggled w/ the heroine Elena and still don't know if I like her. The brother vampires Stefan and Damon are of course polar opposites and their differences are what makes each of their characters. But I really wanted some more growth out of both of them. I gave them 4 books to make significant movement and neither ever does. Sure there's a look here and there or a whisper of caring but in the end they are just what they were in the beginning. Usually these books have a great awakening or a completely unrealistic fight where the heroine and other characters finally break through their own emotional barriers in order to fight evil. Here, not so much. Bonnie really killed the entire last book for me. I consistently expected her to finally take a stand, but it never happens. She is set up to finally move past her fears in the final scene but is still such a wimp!! It's like LJ Smith just couldn't get herself to write anything about a kiss-ass girl who kicks some vampire butt! Oh, well...I am going to read The Return in which Damon is the main focus. Really he was the only scene stealer in the entire series. Read it, don't read it...I don't really think it makes a difference either way."
"Book 3: The Fury -- This one was actually good! No, really, it was. The character underwent an Emma-esque transformation to a less selfish person after she had some eye-opening and maturing life experiences. Like turning into a vampire. And dying. Twice. This is good stuff -- what author actually kills off the main character, much less more than once??
Book 4: If you read 1-3 you might as well read the last one (though Smith just wrote a 5th about a decade after she ended the series, to capitalize on her network TV series and the general vampire hype). It's true what she claims on her website - LJ Smith stories always end sweetly no matter how impossible the odds. This story wasn't remarkable in anyway, but the good thing about this 2-in-1 packaging is you don't have to wait in suspense to read the next installment."
"These two installments are just as cheesy and filled with teenage angst as the first two, but I still can't give these books less than 4 stars. They are fun! Reading about Elena and Stefan's star-crossed love is sort of an addiction. I completed volumes 1 and 2 and decided to read something else in between but I found my mind wandering constantly to thoughts of what was happening in the sleepy Virginia hamlet, so I had to set my other book aside and pick up Volumes 3 and 4 of The Vamp Diaries. Yes, the writing feels forced and sort of sub-par, yet somehow the story still works. Elena and Stefan are the original Bella and Edward. They've been playing "vampire boy meets pretty human girl" for almost twenty years and I would be very surprised to learn that Stephenie Meyers has not read The Vampire Diaries. I think I'll even go so far as to say that I might choose Stefan over Edward.
Overall, my rec is to pick these books up if you like the CW series or if you enjoy fantastical YA books purely for the sake of fun. I don't think that many Lit classes will be dissecting the themes in this book or discussing the literary devices L.J. Smith uses, but not every book has to be a life-changer. You get the idea."
"Alright, so I caved and re-read some really bad books this past weekend. I couldn't help it! I was drawn to them for some reason. And yes I wrote "re-read" - I read these books when I was about to begin high school and I just loved them (of course I was 13 turning 14, so what can I say). Anyhow, the books are The Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith and they chronicle the love triangle between Elena, Stefan and Damon. Elena is mortal and the queen bee of her high school. Stefan is new in town and quite handsome, so he has all the girls crushing on him. Damon is Stefan's older brother and loves to live dangerously. Both Stefan and Damon are vampires and have come to Fell's Church for very different reasons: Stefan wants a fresh new start and Damon wants to torment his brother. Elena finds herself drawn to both brothers and must choose between them. And there you have the plot in a nutshell. So, what happens? Well, Stefan and Elena are in love, but Damon brings out feelings in Elena and in the end they both make her a vampire and then she is still torn about which brother to choose (although it is usually Stefan, the good brother, that she is more drawn to) and then Stefan and Damon's first love comes back to kill them all and Elena sacrifices herself in order to save her town and the people she loves and Stefan and Damon are left heartbroken. Of course the last book has Stefan and Damon returning to Fell's Church to help Elena's old friends deal with a new evil in town and eventually Elena makes her return and there you have it. Oh and Elena chooses Stefan. The end (okay, not really the end, because apparently there is a new book out that talks about Elena and her return from death and reunites the whole gang again, but I haven't read it so I don't really know how bad or good it is). As for the writing in The Vampire Diaries, well, it's okay: the characters are pretty much stereotypical versions of high school kids (queen bee, jock, serious student, jealous rival, etc.) with a couple of vampires thrown in for fun. As for the story lines, well, nothing too original about them, but fun to read nonetheless. Overall, it was fun to read these books again, because it reminded me of when I was young and how bad my taste in books was back then (not really, I loved reading Christopher Pike and R.L. Stine). I guess not all YA books are for adults, huh?"
