"There's an article about Willingham's Fables and his corporalization of fable characters and this book is Moore doing the same for his League. This is Moore at his bawdiest and funniest. I don't remember being very strongly effected by the first book, probably more to blame on me than Moore, but I really enjoyed this book. Of course, the graphic narrative is only half the book and the prose sections were a bit more trouble for me. At one time I was wondering if the prose piece was just some self-indulgent fun but on reading it the prose section does continue the story and deepen the world of the League, just in a very different way then the graphic narrative section. It reminds me of what Frye called an encyclopedic piece, where a writer is trying to fit as much as he can in a story. I found I enjoyed it more when I read it with this in mind and simply enjoyed the way Moore used so much different source material."
"Reprints League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2) #1-6. The League finds England faced with a Martian invasion and try to find a way to stop the Martians. The second series of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is good, but not as good as the first outing. Moore gets a little hung up on some story parts (a little less explicit sex would be nice) and it feels that not much really happens in the story. Both League books are filled with multiple references to literature at the time the characters exist from John Carter Warlord of Mars to the Wind in the Willows, and it is fun to try to spot the many references."
"The first chapter (which takes place on Mars) may be the best comic book art i've ever seen, but as soon as the League returns, it seems like Kevin O'Neill's energy was spent. The art for much of this second volume turns out sloppy and under-whelming - a shame, as the writing tops itself in audacity, imagining incredible possibilities for characters we care about. Not as good as the first volume, overall, but it's hard to mess with the best comic book ever made. (yes, something about it is a little better than Watchmen, i think. The characters are classic characters with already well-established personalities and backgrounds; living, breathing archetypes, rather than archetypes who Moore humanizes after having to cut-up a bunch of different one-dimensional (sometimes two) comic book archetypes. Watchmen re-writes history, whereas "League" expands on, and contributes to, a rich and expansive mythology.).. BONUS here though, the amazing appendix, which not only continues the League's adventures, but presents it in the form of an almanch that chronicles the League's adventures around the world, exploring and quantifying mythical places that Moore and O' Neill take at face value as having really existed. Absolutely unforgettable, and incentive to go (back) and read some of those classics of fantastic literature."
"I was hoping that, as with some of the other graphic novels I've read, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen would get better as it went on.
I was sorely disappointed. The mashing up of different classic novels felt forced, there was little character development, and, to be perfectl honest, I found some of the content disturbing and repellent. I'm not really into rape. At all, actually."
