"By presenting the book as a real Victorian "picture book" for kids, the author can then proceed to use outdated language, racist caricatures, and the like in the story. I can understand the setting and historical accuracy but that doesn't mean I want to subject myself to it, mind. The story doesn't overcome my initial disdain, though I do like the originality with which they recycle old myths, legends, and characters for a new purpose, including Holmes and Moriarty. That's the reason I give two stars."
"This book is really cool. The characters are very engaging; and the world is very well structured. The drawings are superb.
This entire work is a parody of just about every subject it touches on. And it touches many. The most obvious subjects are Victorian England and the popular literature of the nineteenth century. The very many characters and protagonists are famously stolen from mostly well known literary works; and are much more enjoyable because of this theft. Those characters that are not so easily identified are that much more fun when the reader is able to decipher their origins and, thus, their attitudes--which are frequently fleshed out and stretched by Alan Moore. My favorite character--by far--is Miss Wilhemina Murray, lately divorced.
I will not spoil others enjoyment by spelling out her character's literary origin, nor any of the other character's. The discovery is sometimes half the fun. (In any event, Wikipedia has an excellent entry on this book; and all charcters' backgrounds are available there for any reader's information).
This is an easy read and a thoroughly enjoyable one. And, by all means, read the faux pulp "Alan and the Sundered Veil", included near the end. It helps to set up portions of Volume II."
"I am actually re-reading the series in preparation to read Black Dossier. I can't believe I did not add this volume before; I have the second volume added in here. So, I am going to reread it and then write my impressions from the second time around. I did like it the first time, so looking forward to revisiting.
* * * Now that I am done with it for a second time, I certainly recall one of the things I liked about it, and that was the Victorian feel it has. Yes, I know it is set in the Victoria era, but what I mean is that Moore captures the feel of that era very well in this tale. Add the steampunk elements, and you have a very good and entertaining reading experience. The premise of bringing these characters together is pretty good, and the art is well done, enhancing the story. This is a work that leaves the reader wanting more. And as a word of warning, if you watched the movie, but did not read this, you are missing a lot. The movie, entertaining as it may be (or not depending on your view), is very different. They barely took the premise, and they created a very different product. Overall, this is one I highly recommend."
"I liked the literary aspects of this, although now I feel like I need to revisit some classic literature to remind myself who some of these characters were. This was only the fourth or fifth graphic novel that I've read, and the others were much more text-heavy (Fun Home, Persepolis). I had to remind myself to look at all the illustrations and not just skip ahead to the next panel with words. This is the next installment in our student/faculty/staff book club, so I'm very interested to see what they have to say, especially since I'm about the only non-artist in the group."
