"Rick Riordian is one of my favorite adolescent authors. I thought he did a good job with The Maze of Bones but I'm not as crazy about it as I am his Percy Jackson series. Parentless Dan and Amy Cahill are from a very famous and wealthy family. When their favorite aunt Grace dies, they are thrown into a race across the globe after... well... 39 clues that lead to some sort of family secret that will bring world power to the winner. Some of the things I'm liking about this series: how it explores different aspects of history and may spark an interest in young readers to learn more, it's a great series for boys, and girls too, but I'm always feeling like it's harder to find good stuff for boys to read, and the interactive piece that involves actual clues which lead readers to a website where they can delve into the hunt for the 39 clues themselves. So far, it hasn't been necessary to get on the website and use the clues to follow the books, it just a bonus. I'm still somewhat dubious about the 39 Clues Series as a whole. The series is set to be ten books long, each book written by different authors, but all the books being about the same continuing story. It will be interesting to see if all the authors can create a similar voice for the characters despite different writing styles and such. I'm halfway into book two and I like it so far. One of the reasons I'm dubious about the series is because it's so many books, and it kind of seems like the series is just one mass marketing scheme to sell a lot of books. We'll see. For now, we will keep reading to see what is in store for Dan and Amy Cahill!"
"I was impressed with the first book in the "39 Clues" series. I thought that it was going to just be a non-stop action adventure book for boys but it turns out to be something more. The first book in the series "The Maze of Bones" is written by Rick Riordan, the author of the very popular Lightening Thief series. And each book following will be written by an acclaimed junior fiction author; Gordon Korman has penned the second in the series. What I enjoyed is the amount of history, archaeology and science that is involved in this story. It was like reading a "Magic Treehouse" book but for older, more sophisticated readers. And the references are pretty challenging. What I like the most is that these books can be read without buying the cards or logging on to the website to win prizes, although these options are great for those interested. The 39 Clues proves to be a good adventure choice in its own right!"
"I can't decide fully how much I liked this book. It really depends on the rest of the series. It was fun to read. It was very much like National Treasure though, which I do love.
These relatives of a deceased woman are put up to a challenge that could make them the most powerful of their family...or of the world...
It was a bit annoying...and this could be a little bit of a spoiler (so sorry if this bugs you...but I don't think it gives much away)....at how often when Amy and Dan found clues another team would end up getting there just after them and causing some annoying confrontation. And it seemed the same sort of mumbo jumbo happened...and then they were off on to the next place.
But even that said, I'm curious to see where this is going to go. I will read the next book at least.
Oh, and I'm still confused as to why in the middle of the book the page numbers get weird and then they're totally fine again. Is that a clue to something??"
