"This book is an amazing inspirational story about a 16 year old girl: Madeline "Grace" Webb, who runs away because of problems with her step-father (abusive). She runs 14 year old Eric who cares for and hides her from the world, and they start to fall in love. It goes on to tell the story of the relationship between Eric and Grace. But as their relationship builds Grace has a secret and she must tell Eric...and how long can Eric keep her hidden in his clubhouse behind his house while the whole city is in search of her...? --- I absolutely LOVED this book; I could not put it down once. It was very inspirational, entertaining, and well sad too. It's a great read and I still can't stop thinking about it! HIGHTLY RECCOMENDED!!!"
"Richard Paul Evans' books always pull at the heartstrings and this one definitely didn't disappoint. It's about a 14 year old boy named Eric whose family doesn't have much financially. Eric works at a local fast food joint and one evening he finds his runaway classmate, Grace, digging in the dumpster out back for food. He decides to take her home and lets her hide out in his clubhouse in the back yard. Eric does a lot of growing up and he nurtures, protects and falls in love for the very first time. This truly was a touching story. The characters were believable, fun and witty. It also raises awareness about childhood abuse and brings attention to a wonderful organization founded by Richard Paul Evans called The Christmas Box International."
"This latest novel by Richard Paul Evans was, at one and the same time, troubling, compelling, depressing, and hopeful. It brings powerfully to the printed page the terrible scourge of child sexual abuse and its aftermath.
This is the heartbreaking story of Grace, the abused teenage runaway, and Eric, the boy who helps her, and comes to love her. The story is set in the early sixties, a time when such social diseases were kept hidden, unacknowledged, or swept under the rug. All too often the victim was cast in the light of villain, excoriated by friends and family at worst, and at best kept hidden, as if to do otherwise would be shameful. Though thankfully that former societal imperative is no longer generally prevailing, it is all too easy to be transported back fifty years and see how it must have been for those who were among the victimized.
Evans has dipped deeply into the resources, financial and otherwise, that his literary success has brought him, to establish the Christmas Box initiative. The goal of his efforts is best stated by Richard Paul Evans himself:
"Each year over 24,000 youths age out of the foster care system in America. These are teens that were never adopted or able to return to the homes they were removed from due to abuse, neglect and abandonment. Many of these youth leave foster care as young as 18 years old. They are faced with almost insurmountable challenges as they try to navigate the difficulties of adulthood, including incarceration, substance abuse, teen pregnancy, mental illness, poverty, homelessness and suicide. With no one to help them, many of them return to abusive situations or end up homeless on the streets. The Christmas Box International has come up with a 4-phase plan to involve the community in helping these youths."
Evans' stated goal is to bring about a transformation in the lives of these children, and he is certainly making a dent. His novel, Grace, shows why he finds that vision so compelling, and worthy of his efforts. Perhaps we can help as well."
