One comes to understand the war in the Pacific as a theatre for uncommon bravery on the part of ordinary men and the incredible waste of such men by inept leadership. There are incredible insights into the Japanese national character, and in the end, how that affects Japanese policy and behavior today. This is a book with so much meat - not exactly a summer read but still an accessible and dramatic story."
