"Millar is a tricky writer who knows what strings he have to pull in order to have the reader hooked to his books, despite the most of them are just fireworks.
This one is not an exception. Good reading but not a masterpiece.
Also, Cap's point of view is difficult to accept from my (Spanish) point of view. For me, the natural thing is Iron Man's side.
As for the artwork, despite his drawings are quite static, McNiven is great and enjoyable. His Cap and Iron Man are amazing.
A compelling book while reading it but quickly to forget except for the fact that it changed the MU for a while.
A concept that improves upon the realism of Watchmen because it works with long-established heroes from the Marvel universe we already know and love. How much more amazing to have a scene with a face-off to the death between Captain America and Iron Man (every kid's dream!).
Gets right at the heart of democratic politics, morally ambiguous justice, mob mentalities, family-left-at-home narratives.
But it lacks the full depth of what the graphic novel medium can accomplish. The artwork gets pigeonholed into Hollywood-superhero artwork. So much more could be done with lighting, subtlety, and facial expressions. Pacing could've worked better with a different conceptualization of panels too.
"This was the series that made me stop reading comics for a couple years (and hate Iron Man, at least until the movie came out). I like the idea here, but reading this collection reminds me of one of my frustrations: to get the entire series, you have to read a bunch of other books to keep it all straight. This works okay on its own, but lacks the depth of the full story. I only picked it up to fill in the holes of the full Captain America saga that was taking place concurrent with these events."
"I was expecting soo much more from this miniseries - the superhero registration act storyline had immense potential for greatness (much like the Keane Act in Watchmen) but the story fell completely flat. The plot had very little depth and moved much too quickly. It seemed more like an outline than a finely-polished final draft."
