"What a gripping story! This is a young adult adaptation of the best-selling adult nonfiction book "Manhunt." Starting with a detailed account of Lincoln's assassination, the book follows the tracks of Wilkes Booth and his co-conspirators as they try to stay one step ahead of the law. Swanson does a great job of explaining the historical context of this event without detracting from the thrilling chase for Lincoln's killers. In an era when news traveled only as fast as a horse could carry a rider, the men were able to allude the law for quite a while. This is a part of the story that isn't often told, with a lot of close calls and an illuminating glimpse into the anger the South felt towards Lincoln and his government. Interesting and engaging, I really recommend this one!"
"Another angle on the anniversary deluge of Abraham Lincoln books, this one focuses on his assassination and the manhunt that followed. It's an attractive package, old-fashioned cream-colored pages with sepia-toned photos that puts John Wilkes Booth & his cronies in the context of the beginning of the end of the Confederate States of America. I was a big fan of Good Brother, Bad Brother - this title covers some of the same content for a younger (intermediate/upper elementary) audience."
"I read this for the librarian at my daughter's school. She wanted to know what I thought of it so she could pass it on to the students. What did I think? I thought this was a really well written book about a manhunt that I never knew about.
This is the youth version of Swanson's Manhunt, telling the story about the search for Lincoln's assassin. Honestly, I didn't know there were more people involved than John Wilkes Booth...I guess that is just another thing glossed over in my school's version of history and what was important.
I think kids will enjoy reading this book...while nonfiction, it is a gripping tale - a real page turner. Even though I knew how it would end, I simply couldn't put the book down until I got to that end."
"We all know that President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, but Chasing Lincoln's Killer tells the unbelievable story of the inept group of killers who devised a plot not only to kill the president, but a number of government officials as well. In gory detail, relive the gunshot wounds, hand-to-hand combat, and gruesome attacks by a group of men who only wanted to bring the country back to where it was before the Civil War. Chasing Lincoln's Killer is filled with suspense, action, and true life stories of murder, escape, hiding, and justice."
