About this title: For all the discussion in the media about creationism and 'Intelligent Design', virtually nothing has been said about the evidence in question - the evidence for evolution by natural selection. Yet, as this succinct and important book shows, that evidence is vast, varied, and magnificent, and drawn from many disparate fields of science. The very latest research is uncovering a stream of evidence revealing evolution in action - from the actual observation of a species splitting into two, to new fossil discoveries, to the deciphering of the evidence stored in our genome. Why Evolution is True ...

"A nice, solid, thorough case for Darwinism, this book makes a fine companion to Richard Dawkins's The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution (see my review thereof). Where Dawkins lays out the arguments for evolution, Coyne marshals the evidence, and the result is a convincing brief for natural selection. There's some overlap with the two books--giraffe nerves and E. coli make appearances in both, for example--but Dawkins favors the long, detailed argument while Coyne tends toward the example-laden (and rather less polemical) overview, and they bookend each other nicely. Like Dawkins, Coyne draws on evidence from geology, genetics, physics, microbiology, biochemistry, embryology, and more. Dawkins does too, but Coyne goes for breadth when Dawkins goes for depth, with equally satisfying results. The only bad thing I have to say about this book is that it's a pity that it needs to be written; if high school biology courses were doing their work, we wouldn't have 40% of Americans thinking that Fred Flintstone munching on triceratops burgers constitutes a refutation of Charles Darwin. Ah, well, what do you expect from a country where "scientific literacy" means being able to read the decals on a NASCAR racer?"
"Being brought up in a young-earth conservative Christian family, attending Christian schools through college, and attending worship every Sunday, enforced in me the belief that evolution was asinine and only a theory. Essentially...that it was false. The majority of my life this thought process dominated my life and dictated my decisions. However, I always had questions that my teachers neglected to address, and being slightly "bookish," led me through reading to recognize myself as agnostic (strongly leading toward atheism). I came to this conclusion via a large amount of researching a few years prior to the release of this book. "Why Evolution is True" in my opinion is the gold standard and decisive collection of research illustrating via current and relevant examples, why evolution is more than a theory, and ultimately, why it is the truth. This book should be read by all (religious or not) in order to actually be knowledgeable regarding evolution. In no way do I consider myself superior to religious individuals (my entire family is extremely religious!); however, I do believe it essential for individuals to be granted opportunity to see information and research from both sides in order to develop their own opinions regarding what is true. This book will allow for that and enthrall religious and non alike.
Favorite Quote from Why Evolution is True: "The most famous genuine atvisms are probably the legs of whales. We've already learned that some species of whales retain vestigal pelvises and rear leg bones, but about one whale in 500 is actually born with a rear leg that protrudes outside the body. These limbs show all degrees of refinement, with many of them clearly containing the major leg bones of terrestrial mammals-the femur, tibia, and fibula. Some even have feet and toes!""
"Fairly accessible look at the evidence supporting evolution. Coyne is not the first to make the case for evolution: If you want a more visual tour of the topic I'd recommend Donald Prothero's book ("Evolution: What the Fossils Say and Why It Matters"), Stephen Jay Gould has written more extensively - his collected essays are very engaging, and Richard Dawkins has written more antagonistically/forcefully on the subject. But Coyne has given us a good straight forward upgrade of the scientific evidence (Fossils, Molecular Biology, Genetics...)."
"Though the writing is a bit on the dry side, 'Why Evolution Is True' is a clear summary of the overwhelming collection of evidence supporting evolution through natural selection. The book is a response to the significant portion of the US population who choose to throw their lot in with bronze age fairy tales over the mountain of paleontological, biological, and genetic evidence which stands in opposition to their creationist delusions.
This book is also almost identical in scope and character to Richard Dawkins' 'The Greatest Show On Earth'. Though the subject matter is the same, I'd recommend Dawkins' book over Coyne's simply because the writing is more lively."
