About this title: With the first cup of tea, you are a stranger. With the second ...a friend. With the third cup of tea, you are family. One day Greg Mortenson set out to climb K2 - the world's second highest mountain - in honour of his younger sister, but things went wrong and Greg became lost. He wandered into a poor village, where the chief and his people took him in. Moved by their kindness, Greg promised to return and build a school for the children. This is the remarkable story of how Greg built not one but more than sixty schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and how he has dedicated his life to ...

"This book is all about helping other countries I love the storie line but I don't particularly like how it is written. This book was published in 2009 (this year). The guy in this book is amazing he never loses faith and he never gives up even when times get hard. He has a daughter my age (12)! And an 8 year old boy. You should go to penniesforpeace.org it is a great site, I love it!"
"I didn't seem to have time for the reading of the adult version. I did enjoy this one though and had my son read it as well. We had read the picture book version and learned that everything was harder than he had thought it would be.
It did cause me to ponder on some topics...fathers away from the home and the sacrifice that is (so make SURE that it is the will of the Lord). Also, the idea that training the women would bless the country the most because they would be the ones training the children. However I was sad to note in the interview with the first trained woman that she was not interested in marriage but rather in leaving to get more education."
"Provides unique insight into the Muslim culture and the stuggle to promote peace along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Mortenson states that the adult version is required reading for officers in the armed forces. He also consults with the Department of Defense due to his understanding of the culture in this area. Higher reading level (for middle school), so it might be used as a read-aloud."
"I picked this up to read quickly before Greg Mortenson's appearance at the local college. It gives an abridged view of his work in Pakistan and his future work in Afghanistan. Also interesting in this edition are the pictures and a discussion with his daughter, Amira, at the end.
I picked up the "adult" edition and briefly read a few chapters. I think if you're trying to get an idea of what Mortenson and CAI are doing this edition works fine, though you might want to pick up the original to flesh out scenes if you're interested. The chapters are conveniently the same.
You also get a less politicized view of things in the young reader's edition. The challenge is more for students to "do something"."
