"This is a truely wonderful book that I am very happy to have read. Its amazing to read about what my ancestors lives might have been like (I am Swedish myself). I highly recommend every Swede and American to read this book!"
"I rate this high primarily because I've always wondered what conditions were like in Sweden at the time that my Dad's Dad left from there for the USA in 1892. The book sheds some light on that question. This book is the first of a trilogy of novels by Moberg. The other two novels are set in the USA. Maybe I'll read them some time. I own all three books."
"A fascinating look at the Swedish culture and motivations for some of those who came to America in the 19th century. I highly recommend!
The story had a stronger start than finish. The second half had some repetitive sections, but remained effective in its imagery. I thought some of the internal stories that the characters tell were not completely relevant.
Initial response: My mom gave me this book and the next in the series. I hope I can find the remaining 2 in the 4-part series. Excellent, so far. I have an special interest in the subject, since I am descended from Swedish emigrants."
"I was given this book, along with the sequel, but unintentionally read them out of order. I already know much of what is going to happen so my interest is waning. I'll update my rating when finished with the book."
