"In The Last Olympian, we once again meet Percy Jackson, and accompany him on his last adventure in The Lightning Thief series. Readers will be entranced as Percy and his army of demigods struggle to defeat the titan lord Kronos, and the dreaded hundred headed monster-Typhon. Percy also must deal with making choices that not all of his friends and allies will agree with. Percy travels far and wide in order to find out as much as he can about Luke's past, in order to find a way to bring peace to Western civilization and to save the world! We also watch as Percy gets closer to his sixteenth birthday when the truth of the prophecy and his fate will be determined. Will Percy survive or will suffer a true hero's fate?
Rick Riordan has once again outdone himself! I was very pleased with this final book in the series. As I began listening to it, I was a bit nervous as I didn't know if it would be the ending that I was anticipating. Riordan kept me guessing till end of the story. The book was much more than I expected. Questions were answered and loose ends were tied up. Riordan's much loved characters grew and matured throughout the course of this final novel. He also was able to introduce new and frightening characters to keep readers on the edge of their seats. I could stop listening! However, as I listened to the final pages, I had a bittersweet feeling as I knew this was the last book we would read with young hero Percy Jackson who I have grown to love over the years. I cannot wait to read Riordan's next series and to meet the new and exciting heroes at Camp Halfblood.
"The Entire Percy Jackson series is a fabulous set of teen books that teach fairly painless Greek mythology. Almost everything about the series is very cleverly executed and tied together to create the kind of books that kept me up late reading because the plot was so compelling. The basic premise is that the Greek gods and goddesses are actually out there and that they follow the dominant culture- which means that Mount Olympus is actually stationed on the 600th floor of the Empire State Building right now. There are still all kinds of strange creatures and monsters out there, but mortals can't recognize them for what they are because of the Mist that shrouds all mortal's consciousness. And the main point to the overall plot is that the gods and goddesses are still just as promiscuous as ever and there are an abundance of demigods running around- half mortal and half god. Percy is one of these demigods, and he makes several friends with other demigods and strange mythical creatures as they go about battling evil in many forms. I'm an amateur student of Greek mythology and I was thoroughly impressed by the solid background that Rick Riordian has in his mythology. This is a very fun series, I recommend it to anyone."
"This is the final chapter in the Percy Jackson series. Percy and his fellow campers are being pitted against Kronos (Titan lord) and Typhon (monster), as they attempt to wreak havoc (and destruction) on the city of New York (where Mt. Olympus is now located in the Empire State building). Only by working together are they able to prevent the worst from happening. Percy discovers that he is "not the hero" who gets destroyed in the prophecy, although it is his decision to give Kronos/Luke the means to destroy himself (which ultimately saves Olympus). This should satisfy fans of the series - it's full of action and fighting as the heroes make their final stand. The heroes have to make some tough decisions along the way.
I've been finding these harder to pay attention to when I'm listening to the audiobooks, so I'm going to have to re-read this one in its book format at some point. Overall, I have this impression of a flurry of activity, clashing of weapons, and desperate struggle to convince the gods to work together to save Mt. Olympus - which is a lot how the last few volumes in this series played out. There's a little bit of suspense as readers continue to wonder about the identity of the hero foretold in the prophecy, but you sort of know it's not going to be who you're meant to expect (and that it's not going to play out in a way that you expect) - that's the nature of prophecies (it's like the future can't be known even when the future is known). I don't think this will disappoint any fans of the series. When Rachel Elizabeth Dare takes on her new role (as the Oracle!), there's even some suggestion that there will be future books about half-bloods, as one of her first prophecies predicts something terrible in the future - how far off, no one really knows."
"Although this is a great book and I highly recommend reading it, the thing I dislike about it is that it doesn't follow the other books. The author, Rick Riordan, put hints and clues in the previous books in this series of how the Olympians would win the war, however, he did nothing with them. For instance, in the third book, The Titan's Cure, the gods and goddesses on Olympus managed to obtain a monster that could bring the downfall of Olympus if someone other than the king of the gods, Zeus, sacrificed its entrails. Nothing happened with that monster. In the fourth book, The Battle of the Labyrinth, the queen of the gods, Hera, told one of the main characters, Annabeth Chase, that she would somehow get revenge, and if you know Greek mythology, when goddesses aren't happy with you, it isn't too good. The only thing that the uauthor did with that was have Hera send cows that pooped all over after Annabeth (who wasn't hurt at all by the cows). I think that by itself, this would be a great book, but the author could have made better choices."
