"This book is everything you typically hope for in a comic book: it has a plot full of twists and turns that keeps you engaged; it's visually stunning; it has touching moments that show the humanity and complexity of its characters; and it has a sweeping story arc that leaves the world different than it started. It also has many of the problems you expect too: some gaping plot holes; heaps of melodrama; and (unfortunately for me) lots of parts that make no sense unless you've been an avid reader of all the lead-up comics and are fully caught up on all the goings-on in the DC universe. Overall, it's a great comic - but it's not for those new to comics or who haven't kept up on DC for a while."
"not perfect, drags in the middle, requires a lot of outside knowledge of events leading up to it, but still a cut above other capes comics. ending is satisfactorily chilling, but really not recommended to people who haven't read all of the backstory, in which case they would probably read it anyway, being that they've found their way to the backstory."
"I read this in one sitting, all last night. Maybe not the wisest thing to do. Obviously I don't know every bit of DC lore, but from cartoons, wikipedia, talking to greater comic geeks than I, and of course actual comics, I know a fair amount. I liked some of the sheer weirdness of it, but sheer weirdness only holds for so long. Nobody does trippy bonkers better than Grant Morrison many times, but trippy bonkers should be the icing on a great cake, not the consuming element. My greatest issue was the slap dash structure-almost every other page was a jump to a new set of characters, yet another plot line, and ultimately it made for a very erratically flowing story. Any chance of feeling the emotion (and what kind of super hero story supposedly is the great emo fest other than the apocalyptic, end of all existence forever story?) in the story was lost. How can I mourn the death of an iconic character when it comes up out of nowhere in two panels, and the other characters barely acknowledge it with two more panels? Another icon character disappears for most of the story, only to suddenly pop up again at the end to rather anti-climatically sever an age old credo. Yet another icon gets brainwashed by evil for most of the story, and zippo on the aftermath. (Maybe it was in later issues?) Not to spoil much, but Morrison's Turpin VS. Darkseid? Left me thinking of the Animated Series Turpin VS. Darkseid and how that cartoon made me cry. Seriously. Two stars though, for the two part Superman Beyond. Trippy bonkers ala mode, WITH everything that makes a Superman story rock. I don't know what it is with Morrison-how he can write stories that make me think he's just in love with his own nutty brain, and then write brilliant, after brilliant Superman story that welds everything we love about Superman with his own love of wackiness, and it works stunningly."
"Not as good as I hoped it would be. I read this after reading Morrison's work on Batman, which overall is pretty sweet. Unfortunately, the problem with all of these "Crisis" stories are that there are too many characters and universes and just overall stuff going on. I hope this indeed is the FINAL crisis. It's time for the DC universe to move on..."
