About this title: To numb the pain of failure, Ferguson found comfort in drugs and alcohol, addictions that eventually led to an aborted suicide attempt. (He forgot to do it when someone offered him a beer). But his story has a happy ending: in 1993, the washed up Ferguson washed up in the United States, which from the age of 7 he had always seen as a beacon of goodness and possibility. Finally sober, he landed a breakthrough role on the hit sitcom "The Drew Carey Show", which eventually led to his current night job as the host of "The Late Late Show" on CBS. By far Ferguson's greatest triumph was his decision ...

"I had the pleasure of seeing the Craig Ferguson's Late Late Show for the first time after I saw an ad saying one of my favorite actors was scheduled to appear. I watch that night and have watched almost every night since. I love his sense of humor and his non-traditional show style. I decided to check out this book after hearing several guest rave about it. I am not a huge fan of memoirs, but decided to give this one a chance. I saw it as an opportunity to get into the mind and background of someone I was really drawn to. He does what most memoir writers do, begins with childhood and then works his way to present day. He does not make excuses for this bad behavior, Scottish slang, or honest opinions about some of the people he meets along the way and I LOVE that. I was afraid he would spend a lot of time "translating" and not expand on the stories themselves. I believe he is one of the best storytellers I have heard. He spins touching and thought provoking tales of the downside of show business and the dangers of alcoholism. I highly recommend this book to everyone as long as the occasional comment about gas or curse words don't offend you. It is a refreshing look at America and it made me remember why this is the greatest country on earth. At the end Craig reminds us politics do not equal patriotism. This is something we all need to remember in our ever changing political climate."
"American on Purpose seems to be a carthartic exercise for the late-night funnyman (though that is the last thing he thought he would be doing early in life). Ferguson is adept at delivering his autobiography at a brisk pace despite some pretty heavy topics - alcoholism, drug abuse, adultery, divorce, parenthood, and death - just to name a few, though not always in that order. The book probably is not always as "funny ha-ha" as one may expect from a guy who has strayed wackily, and hiliariously, from the the traditional late-night script. Ferguson intended this to be introspective. He succeeds. He very candidly delivers the reader through the darkest points of his life to some of his later triumphs. He does justice to every topic; yet he is not so beholden to one theme or event that the reader is forced to endure minutiae of material that strays from the theme. He expresses his point, and he moves on. His attitude seems to be, in essence, "Yeah, some of this stuff happened. And, it really sucked. But, I am better now and here's why." And, once in while he is pretty funny while saying it. Fans and non-fans will enjoy the ride."
"A tad nervous about giving this five stars, especially since I closed the cover a few seconds ago but to quote one of his countrymen: "It doesn't suck" (Dudley Moore). Mr. Ferguson of The Late Late Show takes his readers through his rough-tumble upbringing known as the Scottish public education system up through his battles with alcohol and drugs, the latter nearly consuming him and burying him six feet deep. He speaks of his failed relationships and career disasters with honesty and humor. In doing so, he repeatedly does one thing that I admire and don't see enough of: takes responsibility for his actions and mistakes. He never gives up, though, because he knows that "the road to success must pass through failure." He also does something I respect: he's proud to be a citizen and doesn't treat 'patriotism' as a dirty word. OK, I'm not nervous about giving him five stars. Thanks, Craig."
"While i like Craig Ferguson, I have to admit that if it were up to me I never would have picked up this book. But it was a gift (and from my mom, no less), so the obligation arose.
And I'm glad it did, because this is really an enjoyable book. For starters, Ferguson can actually write - sure it often sounds like his monologues, but there's rhythm to the language, a bit of pacing to the story, and a strong voice that carries you through the entire store.
And oh what a story it is - which also makes it different from most celebrity memoirs. For while Ferguson often refers to his drug use and alcoholism in his tv show and stand-up routines, here he goes into depth, chronicling the havoc he caused and the wreckage he's responsible for. And it would appear he pulls few punches, being brutally honest about who he hurt and how we screwed up and analyzing why and what the ramifications were. And if at times it reads a bit like one of the steps on his 12 step program, well, better that than the usual drivel. And anyway he keeps it fairly entertaining and funny throughout. And never once does he let himself off the hook for his actions, which is mighty impressive and goes to show that the Scots are a rare and admirable breed (that said, his descriptions of school life and the basket cases it must be producing is a helluva cautionary tale for anyone with kids).
Worth the read if you like Ferguson's brand of humour, or if you like stories told by people who really, by all accounts, should have died in a pool of their own vomit long ago. Or a combination of the two..."
