"Inside of a Dog is a book that explains what your dog is thinking. It mostly disproves misconceptions about what dogs are thinking and gets you to really think for yourself about what a dog, and other animals are thinks. The book starts by explaining various terms and assumptions that help explain the book, it then goes on with the history of dogs, and finally it gets to what dogs are actually thinking.
I would recommend this book to anyone that both likes dogs and is able to read fairly sophisticated and unexiting literature. This book takes a lot of patience to read but it results in the further knowledge of animal psychology and further about how humans developed there own unique psychology.
"Hmm. Well, there is certainly some interesting information in the book, and I learned a few new things I didn't already know. The book starts to drag in the second half though, and over-all it just feels like there is a lot of filler. I'd find myself, after reading a chapter, struggling to figure out what the gist of that chapter had actually been.
The book is written in an easy to read, conversational tone by someone who clearly loves dogs, but I was hoping for more."
"Got this as a (highly appropriate) present, so I really wanted to like it.
Unfortunately, it didn't have the information I was hoping for. It is clearly pitched for a general dog owning audience, rather than those interested in comparative cognition/perception -- but as the author is a researcher at UCLA, I had high hopes for interesting content.
I hope someone like Juliane Kaminski or Brian Hare will come out with a more cognition-oriented book on dogs soon!"
"I really enjoyed this "soft science" look at life from the perspective of a dog - or, as the author refers to it, the dog's umwelt. Combining her own studies, studies done by other scientists, and her casual observations of her own two dogs, Horowitz describes (and sometimes simply theorizes) what goes on in the mind of a dog. Do dogs have a sense of self? How do they learn, and what does how they learn tell us about them? These are some of the questions explored. Frequently, I would break away from the book to relate those parts I found particularly fascinating to my husband."
