"Yes, I like Kathy Griffin. I assumed this book would consist mostly of what she makes her living doing, dishing about celebrities and that it would be mildly entertaining. She does have a bit of that in her memoir, but what I wasn't expecting was that the book is really more about her life growing up, her beginnings in comedy, how the comedy world works and how she got where she is today. But what made this book so interesting and engrossing was how suprisingly honest and revealing she is about herself. It for sure has lots of laugh-out-loud moments involving celebrities as you'd hope, but there's also lots involving herself, family and friends. No, it's not a literary masterpiece, and the entire chapter on Steve Wozniak could have been left out entirely, but for the entertainment value it provded me is why I rated it 4 stars. She of course has a completley foul mouth, so if that bothers you for sure don't bother with this book:)"
"I read this on my Kindle, so thanks to whoever is responsible for making it available there. This was a good Hollywood memoir with somewhat juicy gossip, but it's primarily about her. Her family and career history was very compelling. And she's so dang honest, you really feel like you're getting the truth about her. She has so many flaws, that she's charming, in spite of her rough edges. I'm not a fan of her show, but for any of her fans, this is clearly a must-read. I'm not against her show, I just don't have the TV on at the right time or something. I did see a couple of episodes, and enjoyed them, however. Anyway, I thought the book was funny and compelling. I'd almost give it 5 stars and I'm not sure what's holding me back from doing it. Maybe I'll change that. It should have at least 4 and a half stars."
"I find Kathy Griffin funny and you probably need to appreciate her sense of humor to really get this book. There are some "winceable" moments, as she puts it. It really is, however, a no-holds-barred look into her life and career. As you read about the break-up of her marriage, her confrontation with her family over her brother's alleged pedophilia, and her father's death, you really get to see a softer side of Kathy. In addition, you gain a deep appreciation for how hard this woman has worked to get what she has. She truly is one of those people who just never gave up, in spite of people telling her she wasn't good enough, funny enough or pretty enough.
This is book is contains a lot of the crassness and fiestiness for which Griffin is known, but it is charming and witty as well."
"I am a huge Kathy Griffin fan and since I'm going to see her 10/10 at the Chicago Theater, I knew that I had better read this before going to the show. I agree with a lot of other reviews I've seen that this was a pretty good book, but was bogged down by the chapter of emails between Kathy & Woz (Steve Wozniak of Apple Computer fame) and by the material rehashed from her Grammy-nominated comedy album For Your Consideration. Otherwise, it's a quick look at Kathy's home life growing up, how she was influenced by her parents, how she started in show business, and why she's the hardest working woman in comedy still to this day.
I know a lot of people were disappointed she didn't do more gossiping about celebrities, but I wasn't. I preferred seeing the connections she made to some big names in comedy (Phil Hartman, Jack Black, Conan O'Brien, Janeane Garafalo, Margaret Cho, etc.) and how she persevered to make it where she is today.
Although some of the chapters are a bit off in timing (she talks about her husband being on "My Life on the D-List", but it wasn't until the next chapter that she even talked about getting married) it was a fun mix of having an intimate conversation with Kathy about her life and listening to her set.
