"I liked this book a lot. I think the author gave us reality of meny people! the part when he fights is realy good but i think the trainer acts very wiard! his life is very harsh and i cant imagine living without my parents! it is a realy good book that keeps you into it ... i gave this book 3 stars because it was good but if a compare it i have readed better ones.. but it was good!"
"Reading this for my Young Adult Resources class. It takes place in the 1960s, in the "hood" and follows the identity crisis of a teen who can't decide how he feels about the political, racial and social turmoils surrounding the civil rights movement.
I didn't like it all that much. I felt the emotional turmoil of the kid was well written and pretty accurate. However, the writing style itself was irritating and repetitive. Obviously the author tried to recreate how jumpy and disjointed time can seem in the midst of a boxing match by using paragraphs full of short, one word sentences. I found it bothersome but effective. Perhaps it was the subject matter. I've always hated boxing."
"In one sense, this is a typical sports story--young, underprivileged kid finds a sport and works hard to overcome the obstacles and become a success. In this case, Alfred Brooks, a high school dropout living in Harlem in the mid 1960s finds himself trying to succeed as a boxer. But Mr. Lipsyte has done a good job of it, adding some depth to the plot and setting. I was impressed how he was able to create mental pictures of New York and the small time boxing world of the era. It might be simply that over the years I've picked up those images from a variety of films and television programs, and the writing merely touched the right buttons to bring those images to mind. Or maybe his writing is indeed that good. Either way, I enjoyed it. As for the plot, well, I won't say anything more, lest I spoil something. Check it out for yourself and find out what happens."
"Alfred Brooks is scared. He's a high school dropout and his grocery store job is leading nowhere. His best friend is sinking further and further into drug addiction. Some street kids are after him for something he didn't even do. So Alfred begins going to Donatelli's Gym, a boxing club in Harlem that has trained champions. There he learns it's the effort, not the win, that makes the man - that last desperate struggle to get back on your feet when you thought you were down for the count."
