"A fascinating read. Like most people, I have read a few of these fables, and heard a few more. They are guick and fun to read, and any one of them could spark a fascinating discussion.
For example--the King of the Frogs: The frogs ask for a king, and are given a piece of wood. After a time, they complain that the wood does nothing, and are given a crocodile instead, who eats them. The moral: better a do-nothing ruler than an evil tyrant.
Does this lesson still apply today? Has our complex system of government made the idea obsolete? Americans like to point to other countries and criticize their lazy or destructive dictators. Is our own system truly that much better, or have we so many kings from town mayors up to the U.N. that we have lost all control? Could a country as large as the U.S. still rise up unanimously against an ineffective or self-indulgent leader? In Aesop's time, with Greece's conquest of so much of the known world, was this theory true even then?
Those are a lot of hard questions from a story only 3 sentences long."
