"I loved this series as a teenager. It had sailing and music and family strife and living outdoors and a bunch of tiny dragons. Yep. Teen girl fantasy candy, at least for this teenager.
But having read them since, I'm still a fan. Both Dragonsong and the next in the series, Dragonsinger, are nice coming-of-age/independence stories. The writing's not particularly complex, but McCaffrey works hard to outline a social structure and detail the environment, and it's a nice place to live for the few hours it'll take to read the book."
"This was a GREAT book! I did not want to read this book - because I'm not into dragons and "stuff" - but my husband "made" :) me read it. Once I got past the beginning with the weirdo terminology - I LOVED IT! I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because it was too short (less than 200 pages) and the plot line could have been developed so much more. However, my husband assures me that the books which follow this one in the series are even better.
It was a very "clean" book - any age could read this book. And, if you're a Stephanie Meyer fan, it had a bit of "The Host" feel to it - underground caverns with an outcast looking for a place to belong.
I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series."
"This book followed Menolly, a likable character who has an affinity for music and songwriting. Girls aren't allowed to play music so she eventually ends up running away and finding some fire lizards. She impresses nine of them. This was a quick read and I enjoyed the main character and how this book tied in with the main Dragonriders series. The only thing I didn't like was the beginning. The way she was treated by her own parents was appalling and they didn't seem to have any real reason to abuse her the way that they did. They all just assumed she was dead when she ran away and went on with their lives. Sad! But I care enough about this story to want to go out and get the remaining two books in the trilogy."
"I had to read Dragonsong for my English class. If it wasn't that I probably wouldn't have ever even heard of the book. Dragonsong is a story about a girl named Menolly. She had a close relationship with there previous Harper before he died. Everyone was against her playing music since it is a man's job according to them. A lot happens after and the book goes on.The book was interesting and I thought it could have been a lot better if they had a better plot and stop explaining everything right there. If you like fantasy novels or even dragons, you will possibly like reading Dragonsong."
