About this title: The story of the Battle of Iwo Jima is told through the lives of six young men pictured in the famous news photo of the raising of the American flag on Mt. Suribachi. Hailing from different parts of the United States, these young men can be seen as representative of the generation that grew up in the '30s and went off to fight in the '40s.

"I heard about this book from my dad because he read it before me. The author wanted me to take away from this book that many people struggled to keep the country safe. I learned that 6 people rasied the flag on Mount Surbiachi and only 3 left the island. The book could have been better because it took a little while to get into the main part of the book. This book reminds me of any WWII book. The author's atyle of writing is sort of interviewing format. I would recommend this book to a history teacher. Or maybe someone whos favorite class is history."
""Listen to me, and follow my orders, and I'll try to bring all of you back safely to your mothers." These words were spoken by Sergeant Mike Strank, one of the six flag raisers of Iwo Jima, the first battle on Japanese soil. James Bradley's Flags of our Fathers introduced me to the horrors of war. First, Flags of our Fathers shows a small piece of what our forefathers had to go though to make this a strong, free, and proud country. No one realizes the full horror of what war brings until reading books like Iwo Jima. This little island becomes a prime example of American courage. This was one of the most horrific battles in history. No one realizes that of 1,688 marines who landed on Iwo, only 177 walked off. Flags of our Fathers opens a door to World War 2 and what the people in this country went through. Second, Flags of our Fathers was written by none other than the son of one of the six flag raisers of Iwo Jima. James Bradley is able to portray the journey that his father, Jack Bradley, and the other five flag raisers went on to find themselves together on top of Suribachi raising the American flag. Unfortunately, James was not able to get any real story's from his father since Jack passed away of a heart attack. Third, the six flag raisers did not just find themselves on Iwo Jima. Flags of our Fathers tells the story of how the marines fought the brutal Japanese on many different islands in their quest for victory. This amazing book show the story of climbing Mt. Suribachi on Iwo to put the American flag on top. Flags of our Fathers tells the story of how one of the most famous photographs, the flag raising scene, in history was an accident. I highly recommend Flags of our Fathers to anyone interested in warfare or great stories of American history and courage."
"Very interesting book on the guys who raised the flag at Iwo Jima. It started out a little slow giving the backgrounds of the men, and the book seemed choppy in a few places, but overall still worth reading.
I especially liked all the detail surrounding the action on Iwo Jima and how that particular day they just happened to be in the area and were asked to raise the second flag. He really humanizes the men and you feel their grief when they realize they are being portrayed as heroes, when all they think they did was raise a flag that they were told to."
"This book confirms the quote that "War is Hell." It was very graphic in its depection of the battle of Iwo Jima, and the two postings of the U.S flag on that famous prometory. I loved reading of the process of how this story came to be, and the research involved, as James Bradley, step by step discovers the history of men in the famous photograph and sculpture, one of whom was his father. The book also reaffirms my conviction of, and commitment in doing interviews with our honored elderly. Our grandparents' generation needs to be encouraged to tell their stories, and our generation and that of our grandchildren, need to know those stories. Our pampered life style needs to be examined in comparison to those lives of sacrifice and depravation. There is much to be learned in this process."
