"I thought this book is a good introduction into teaching children that life isn't about what you get but what you do with what you have. I think some of the wording may not be appropriate for some students but I do believe it gives a honest description of how soem children feel in those situations. This will help bridge the gap between foster children and children with their biological parents in the classroom"
"It took me a while to get into this book, but the ending flew by and I ended up really liking the book. I like that Katerine Paterson is not afraid to tackle issue straight on. It makes her books seem so much more real. I was reading and wishing for Gilly to get over herself and start accepted help from people and the love of her foster family. Then I had to think for a minute and thought that this is probably what an eleven year old girl with her background would do and how she would act. I like that Gilly's acceptance and feelings for Trotter, W.E., Mr. Randolph, and Ms. Harris did not just develop overnight. It was gradual and seemed very natural. There is also no typical happy endings, which I find is something that Katherine Patterson does a lot.
I would use this book as a whole group reading book and/or small group. There is so much chance for discussion from the book about character, family, and social services."
"I have hated this book's cover since I became a teacher and have been totally turned off to reading it. What a mistake!!! What a mistake to incorrectly (again!) judge a book by its cover.
I loved this book. There are so many issues dealt with so beautifully. It's a story of wanting something different than what we're given... what we have no control over. It's about being angry at the world for what is unfair and wanting to keep others out so we don't get hurt, but that isn't really living, is it? Just like real life, the story doesn't wrap up with a perfect bow at the end. It's still a good ending, and it rings true because it's not neat and tidy and happy.
This story is going to stay with me for a long, long time."
"I really like Gilly, a young foster child. She hopes her mother will come for her and is fostered by a woman named Mrs. Potter (who Gilly just calls "Potter") and lives with another young boy, W.E. (William Ernest) and next door to a blind African American man, Mr. Randolph. There is a bit of racism in the first part of the book that is bothersome. It's a good story of Gilly's struggle to understand the important people in her life."
