"The book which made Joseph Campbell's career. Here he outlines his story of the hero's path, the archetypal story that appears in every culture in every time, with archetypal characters who populate the oldest cave drawings to modern films: the mono-myth. Campbell, along with Vladimir Propp and Carl Jung defined these story and character patterns that all human beings recognize because of our 'collective unconscious.' The hero's quest for something larger than him/herself -- a going out, a fulfillment or illumination, and a return. A journey that informs every tradition, ritual, and custom in every time and in every place."
"Campbell tells the universal story (the "monomyth") in this very interesting book. Looking through all world cultures and religions we find a very common story. It is no surprise this book was a great influence on George Lucas, for the story of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars possesses many traits of the monomyth (as does the story of Harry Potter and probably most epic movies if we think about it). I appreciate this book for its breadth as stories from all regions of the world are brought in. My main complaint is that in looking at the similarities of the world's religions alone is reductionistic in ignoring the differences. A lot of uniqueness in Christianity and Islam must be ignored, which causes me to wonder what was ignored in the stories/religions/myths of other cultures. Also, some of the Christian stories mentioned have absolutely no basis in actual history and have no legitimacy in mainstream Christianity. This makes me wonder if the stories of religions I am not as familiar with are mainstream to those religions or obviously fictional creations. But overall, an interesting read."
"Though not designed for this purpose, it is a great book to read while taking an improv class. One can substitute the word improv for mythology in a few of the paragraphs and it still makes sense!"
"This is Joseph Campbell's most notable book. In it he jumps from various religions and mythologies and shows the archetype of the hero and traces his arc threw story after story. In it you see the common motif of the orphaned sheep herder who leaves his village in searc of his destiny ony to encounter wizards bearing magic swords, princesses in desperate need of rescue, his journey into the belly of the beast, and his eventual meeting with his father... the King. Sound familiar? It should it's the character arc for nearly every story you've grown up with, and, of course, George Lucas's Star Wars."
