"Honestly, this book seems to only be good for classroom purposes. It's not for the casual reader, as there is a LOT to digest inside, but it does present some answers as to the origins of the Jewish faith.
Things to be careful about in connection with this book is that the authors sometimes completely dismiss stories within the Tanakh as folktale motifs and deny their basis in fact. This is not entirely safe to do because, whether the characters in the story are factual or not, the story itself should not be thrown to the wind. Maybe instead of getting wrapped up in whether or not the story is true the authors should have asked "Why is this story being told" or "What does this story teach"....
If you have a class on Judaism or Jewish history, you might want to grab a copy. Be prepared to take a month to read it cover to cover. It's a whopper."
