"This was based on a true story, and was supposedly well researched. I did find, however, that I would have preferred to read the account referenced in the foreward of the book based on Mary Jemison's own retelling of her own story. Still, the book was written for children and was interesting enough."
"I didn't think it was a very good book. It was so sad! A girl's town was raided was taken captive and sent to live with far away. There she is treated meanly by Indians. But soon she is treated better and better. She misses her parents and white people. She tried to escape to her parents but fails. It was so sad! Then she gets a choice to leave and go live with white people or stay."
"The true story is fascinating. This fictionalized account is better than nothing, though I think today's teens will have a hard time putting up with the sweet innocence of the outdated writing style."
"I thought that this was an interesting book - I was not aware that so many white settlers had been captured and adopted by several Indian tribes. Not only does this book explain what this type of life was like during the mid 18th century, but it also describes how Mary Jemison was able to adapt and learn the ways of a foreign culture."
