"The best thing about this book is that it reproduces the original as it first appeared, with the clever integration of text and illustrations. Unless money is a major consideration, you shouldn't purchase any edition that's text-only.
The annotations give a good view of what Baum was trying to achieve, as well as insight (both favorable and unfavorable) into his writing abilities. There is also a longish (for a bood of this size) biography of Baum.
"It was fun to read the annotated version, though it took longer to read all the notes than to read the text itself. I enjoyed discovering the author's use of color primary colors for each of the kingdoms and secondary colors where the kingdoms touched or overlapped; Kansas was gray, of course. I also enjoyed learning how much the traditions of classic quest literature influenced Baum, as well as the events of his own life and losses in his own family. I have lots of little details to watch for in the 1939 MGM movie, now."
"I love the Wizard of Oz, but even for me, the notes and comments soon got distracting. I definitely would not recommend this book for your first read through of the book. Many of the notes were obvious and not really all that pertinent to the story. That being said, the included illustrations were lovely and certainly do add something that is missed from text only additions of the Wizard of Oz."
