"One of the most famous Batman stories of all time is offered for the first time in hardcover in this special twentieth-anniversary edition. This is the unforgettable that forever changed Batman's world, adding a new element of darkness with its unflinching portrayal of The Joker's twisted psyche. "This was a really good comic. As my first Alan Moore work, I expected a lot, and it definitely lived up to my expectations. Although I didn't know much about the specific characters (other than Batman and Joker from the films), I felt like no previous history was necessary to really dive into the story. The artwork was great, and helped with the dark mood of the book. I am slowly learning about the Batman universe in comics, and like that this book is actually still in the current continuity. I liked learning the backstory of the Joker, and how he came to be the madman that he is. I never thought that I could empathize with such a person. The story was short, but I appreciate that the story was told in a condensed, meaningful way. My only gripe with the book is the ending...I guess I just need to read on past this thin volume to satisfy my questions... I recommend this to anyone who is curious about the Batman universe and comics in general."
"Considering the response Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" received from both critics and fans alike, it is no surprise that this graphic novel was one of the primary sources he used when mining material to use for the second, and noticeably darker installment in the Batman series.
Eschewing any plot summary, the real appeal to reading this novel is in Moore's examination of the sociopathic nature of the Joker--as well as his unhealthy relationship to Batman. Brian Bolland's visceral presentation of the events-both past and present-should disturb readers as he attempts to capture the madness and violence surrounding the Joker as he encounters both Commissioner Gordon and his daughter Barbara and leads the near-defeated police officer into the madhouse with Batman on his heels. It is at this point that the reader gets to really see what makes the Joker tick as well as the fine line that separates the Clown Prince of Crime and the Dark Knight.
I can't recommend this book enough to fans of the graphic novel medium or even those who found themselves on the edge of their movies seats for Heath Ledger's performance in the "Dark Knight.""
"Touted as the Joker book to beat all Joker books. It is alright. I am not certain the execution lived up to the idea. I think the shortness of the story hurt the amount they could immerse you in Joker's pathos. And the Joker origin story is best read, as Brian Bolland puts it, as just another one of the Joker's delusions. Which is something they obviously pulled for the recent movie.
Tim Sale's introduction was mostly useless (and I"m a Tim Sale fan), but Brian Bolland's closing was interesting. It gives the reader some decent insight. I also liked Bolland's art. The layout was great too, but in a Moore book, that is more likely Moore's doing.
I am no expert in Alan Moore, but it seems like this is more a must read for a Joker fan than a Moore fan. I still think Dark Knight Returns has the more memorable Joker portrayal."
"Twice in the past 2 weeks I've gotten into arguments with comic book nerds about Heath Ledger's Joker. I think his performance was sublime. One of my friends was indifferent. The other actively hated it. Cleary they're both wrong and I am right. As always.
However, after reading this, and reading a little more about the classic Joker character I sort of kind of see what they're saying. Almost.
You see, the Joker isn't JUST a nihilist with odd taste in clothes. He's a tortured soul who affects nihilism. He's precise in his appearance, they'd say. Not greasy and scarred like Ledger. He isn't scarred at all, in fact, he's just altered slightly.
In the end, they're still wrong. What makes the Joker interesting isn't his fastidiousness or the details of how he became the Joker. What's fascinating is his nihilism. It can be represented in various ways, but at the end of the day, Ledger's take on his nihilism was frightening and perfect, no matter how much a purist you are.
Oh, and this graphic novel was good but nothing special."
