About this title: A few years after its liberation from the brutality of French colonial rule in 1803, Haiti endured a period of even greater brutality under the reign of King Henri-Christophe, who was born a slave in Grenada but rose to become the first black king in the Western Hemisphere. "Difficult to read, but intriguing, and beautifully written - seems to have translated to English fairly well. Inspired me to read a lot more about the history of the period and events..."
"Reading for AAAS 310 Global Perspectives of the African Diaspora class... I had a hard time with this one, based on the fact that I realized I know little about Haiti, more specifically the Haitian revolution. I have a real problem with Alejo Carpentier writing this story.. because a) he's Cuban, and b) he's white. Surprisingly enough, I found myself immersed in a story of historically accurate characters that has virtually no plot."
