Do I believe it to be the word of God? I don't know. If the angel Gabriel really did speak to Mohammad (appearing to him first while he slept in a cave), I think it is odd that he was not also commanded to write or have someone write the recitations. God has always commanded his prophets to record their prophecies and histories as servants/messengers of God. However, it is commonly believed that Mohammad was illiterate. Apparently, the recitations that Mohammad shared with others were merely told and retold for hundreds of years before being written -- like some record-breaking game of telephone -- who can say what the original messages were?
The value to me was understanding our Muslim neighbors in this world: their perspectives, views of Jews, gentiles, nonbelievers and their families. Interesting to note, there was only one mention of women and veils. No where did it say to that martyrs for Allah would be rewarded with 72 virgins; but it does often say the faithful would be rewarded with worthy spouses and live in a beautiful place."
