About this title: Since its original publication nine years ago, "Leadership and Self-Deception" has become an international word-of-mouth phenomenon. Rather than tapering off, it has sold more copies each year since 2004 than it did in any of the first four years after publication. The book's central insight that the key to leadership lays not in what we do, but ...

"I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. It was better than any of the 'leadership/management' books I read this summer. It reminded me a bit of The Peacegiver. The information in this book can be useful. The name of the book is a bit misleading or not helpful in understanding the book. The name suggests that this is a way to be a better leader, but it really is about being a better person. The name of the book seems like a marketing ploy to get business types to read it. I think that the being a better leader part comes in Phase 2 and 3. Toward the end of the book Bud states Our effort now is in three phases,...Yesterday and today, you've begun what we call out Phase 1 curriculum. It's all we had in the beginning, and it alone has tremendous impact. It's the foundation for everything that comes later. It's what makes our results here possible. Our work in Phases 2 and 3 will build on what we've covered by plugging you in to a concrete and systematic way of focusing on and accomplishing results I'm curious as the what the 2nd and 3rd Phases contain. I think that this book or Phase 1 is intended to be the foundation or better person part and that the companies and/or individuals form their own Phase 2 and 3. That is they build a foundation with Leadership and Self-Deception and create their own plans on how best to use the information. The cynic in me thinks that The Arbinger Institute will be more than happy to help you and/or your company with Phases 2 and 3 for a price. There is a lot of information in this book in this book on being a better person and that makes it worth reading. It has made me more interested in The Arbinger Institute."
""WHAT?" you say to yourself. WHAT is this fantasy-story-loving girl doing reading a book that demands shelving on the business/psychology shelf? And a valid question it is. I would never in one thousand years have picked it up if my dearly beloved husband hadn't read it first and told me that it changed his life. Changed it to the point where I am SEEING him look at the world in a different way. And when my husband, who has watched me read for 11+ years now and has never once asked me to read something, asks me to read this book, what can I say?
I read it, and I can see why he asked me to. This book will make you feel like a weasel on one hand, recognizing that so much of our interactions with others are the results of our own decisions to do or not do what we know is the "right" thing to do. But on the other hand, you recognize the potential within you to just CHANGE things - change the way you interact with the people you care about the most.
The writing style is readable - it's conversational with lots of real-life examples. Probably for someone used to reading business/self-help books it would be a breeze to read. For inexperienced me, though, it made my brain work hard and I still keep having to ask my husband questions about how to apply the ideas. I think that it will take time (and probably some re-reading) to use the jargon effectively in my mind - phrase like "self-betrayal" and "being in the box" still don't roll off the tongue, if you know what I mean. But I do know what it feels like when I start seeing myself as the "good mom" dealing with my "my crabby kids." And I don't like that me. I want to see myself as I really am and I want to openly see those I love as they really are: as people (not objects) with thoughts and feelings and desires just like I have and which are just as valid as my own."
"This is one of my all time favorite books. It makes me want to grow and change. If I could read it really quick everyday to keep it fresh in my mind as I went about the day I would. Seriously brings new perspective. My dad actually introduced it to us a few years back when all of the members in his CES region read it. He told us if we would read it he would pay us twenty-five dollars. I don't think I ever got the money, but it's ok, the insight I got from it was worth so much more. If you want something to help you improve a bit, read this. It is not just another boring self-improvement book. At least for me it was a page turner."
"Okay - I know. Another one of those classical leadership books which really annoy people and frustrate them. Standard canned solution on how to manipulate people, right? Wrong. This book actually takes individuality to a new level. It talks about treating others around you well. It also goes off about burdens and how you carry some things which cause you to be a mirror. They used the standard catch phrase of "In the box" or "Out of the box" which does get frustrating. I thought of the simplicity of the message was excellent. It got points for the fact that they temporarily pulled it out of the business setting and into familial life. It also get points for practicality. It comes complete with diagrams too. Granted - it is just just stick figures but reading something like this with pictures makes it slightly more digestable."
