"Although there's a lot of rambling going on here, this is a pretty damn reasonable book. Basically, if government's aren't tolerant of religious differences, it's just going to bite them in the ass by making hypocrites or seditious enemies of those they're intolerant of. And it's not going to do any good to try and force people to share certain religious beliefs, because we tend to arrive at beliefs by justification, not force.
The most basic claim, one that we would do well to remind ourselves of today (and one which it would be nice to see someone share on CNN), is that disagreement over religious matters is widespread, persistent, and intractable, so if we're going to have a government based on the consent of all those governed, that government had better not invoke some particular set of religious beliefs as a basis for its policies."
"At the heart of a civil society attempting to keep diversity, not necessarily equality, though the equality argument must extend from his arguments. One of the great statements in human history. Tolerance not from compassion, but from self-interest. It works."
