"My copy is actually 'The Children's Life of the Bee", published in 1923, which I think is the same book but might omit a chapter on some of their more scandalous behavior. It is an almost spiritual examination of the inner workings of a honeybee hive and is truly fascinating and even somehow moving. Maeterlinck also wrote accounts of ants, termites (the white ant), spiders, and other smaller forms of life, but I have yet to track them down. This is a very special book that I would highly recommend to anyone I know."
"these three books by mr. materlinck are all excellently written and all that, but the real interest here is that each of the series (though i haven't found the one about the ants) uses the individual insect as an abeyance to elaborate on a different form of social order; the bees serve as an interesting point by which he compares matriarchy, and the termites (white ants, and this one is my favorite) are evidently reminiscent of communism! That one is excellent, and his writing has a very nice jose saramago clip to it. Evidently he nixed the idea for the termite book from a south african writer who wrote 'The Soul of the White Ant' after living in the jungle and then plugged himself, so i imagine that one's pretty interesting as well."
