"This is definitely an "active" book, not a passive one. If you just read it, you probably won't get too much out of it, but if you actually follow the exercise (there's really just one), it can produce some amazing results. I also think that this is one of those books that has to reach you at the right time. For me, it just seemed to be what I needed to hear at this time in my life. The exercise (investigate something that's bothering you, ask four questions, then turn it around) is very simple, but not necessarily easy. It's all about facing reality and being honest with yourself. I found the method, and Katie herself, to be pretty amazing. She has the most wonderful way of viewing life.
And, having been a few weeks since I finished it, I can now honestly say that I'm continuing to benefit from Katie's method. I can't yet say that it's changed my life, but I think the potential is there for some really amazing joy."
"This really is a life changing book. The concepts are so simple. It helps you to enjoy life the way it is. I really liked how it help you apply her simple questions to everyday situations. I found myself enjoying my trip to the grocery store, rather than being annoyed at the long lines and slow cashiers. This is a great book! I started into another book of hers called A Thousand Names for Joy - and think she (Byron Katie) is not really living in reality."
"OMGoodness...this is a very powerful book! I've read a ton of books about self-help and this one is one that has taken me the farthest! The knowledge is most eye-opening and liberating. Life is what it is...and the world is how we each perceive it to be. We have the power and control to let go and allow life to unfold as it will. Each day we have the opportunity to grow and learn...accept reality and savor the fact that you are who you are, you are a very special person, just the way you are. And so is everyone else, they are growing every day just as you. No one is in the same place as you and each has an importance to your life. Each person you are in contact with is there for a reason and you have the opportunity to grow and learn from them as well as them learn from you...even if they are not ready to receive.
I'm working through the process...have just started and can tell there is a ton of 'thoughts' that I carry which have colored my 'clarity' making it virtually impossible at times. This book has taught me so many things already and I feel a renewed liberty in my own life and heart that I've never felt before! Wow, the fact that reality is reality can be so simple...we often miss opportunities to grow. My mind and heart are opened and I'm happier then ever...this process of The Work is PRICELESS.
My mother always told me that with whatever measure I judge someone else by the same measure I judge myself. Look in the mirror and see yourself as others see you. Each of us have to look ourselves in the mirror each morning. If we try to point the finger at another person, remember there are always three pointing back at us. We can't change other people but we can 'inquire' deep within ourselves and learn from them. It isn't our 'business' to know their 'business' or even God's 'business' but it is within our power to know our own 'business' and become what we were meant to be. Loving, generous, liberated, happy, and peaceful within our own reality!
I've shared these things with my children and have tried to practice them but can see places where I missed the mark. But I do know that I did the best with what I knew at the time. Remembering that if I have a harsh thought against someone then it must be coming from deep within myself so I should be careful what I say or think of others. I'm learning to forgive myself and to forgive others. What happens in life, happens with no control necessary. What I'm charged to do is learn and grow within myself as the opportunities arise each day.
I also remember my mother telling me, and I've told my children over and over, that when something bothers me about someone else then it is most likely something that bothers me about me. Hence, when two people are really alike then they have more conflicts. Even, if a parent has more trouble with one child over another then it could be that the parent sees themselves in that child. Talk about unconditional love...it first starts within our own hearts and minds. If we have a 'thought' that we 'react' upon, there is a place to change that and make it better...we can do The Work and learn, even grow. We can choose to grow and learn from those thoughts...becoming better people as well as live happily ever after. It really is possible to be at peace with whatever happens in our life. The choice is ours and ours alone. We can fight 'reality' or we can learn to accept it for what it is and move on.
This book should be read by everyone but it isn't for the faint in heart! It will take 'work' to do The Work and I'm blessed to have found this book. I think this book found me...I intend on sharing it with my family...so they too can learn to be free from 'thoughts' that haunt them and learn to live at peace within themselves...each and every day...(-:
Don't pass this one up for it could change your world forever for the good of yourself and everyone around you!
Cognotive Therapy that you can do yourself: by definition, "Cognitive therapy seeks to help the client overcome difficulties by identifying and changing dysfunctional thinking, behavior, and emotional responses. This involves helping clients develop skills for modifying beliefs, identifying distorted thinking, relating to others in different ways, and changing behaviors."
There is a 'way' to have joy and peace...I would say that it is The Work!"
"Where in your life are you experiencing unhappiness and suffering? Could you entertain that your emotions are really just results of your thoughts? In this amazing and mind-blowing book, Byron Katie shows us a simple and effective formula for reaching joy by questioning our thoughts that create unhappiness. Katie has found a way to weave the wisdom of spiritual sages into an easy-to-understand tool that anyone can use any where to transform his/her life. One of the best books I have ever read."
