"Katherine Paterson is masterful in creating vividly real characterization in this book. It seems that the reader knows Lyddie personally. Far from being perfect, Lyddie is tough, ambitious, independent and knows how to work. After fighting off a bear, Lyddie is orphaned and then separated from her siblings. The time and place are Lowell textile factories in Massachusetts. In desperation, Lyddie becomes one of the factory girls. Some background education about the textile mills would be helpful in understanding much of the terminology and references made to the equipment and work in the mill. This book is probably best for older, junior high or high school readers. There are references to child molestation and an out of wedlock relationship and pregnancy that could be confusing for young children."
"Well, I must say. The first 5 chapters at least are quite tedious. Not altogether but quite. Perhaps it will pick up.
Setting: Vermont
Lydia understands that working for the Cutlers, she is a slave almost as much as Ezekiel is. One of the differences though is that there are no bounty hunters looking for her.
New Setting: Lowell, Massachusetts
Not only do the mill agents want the weavers to take a piece rate reduction but they want them to take on four looms each, in effect, producing more for less while the agents line their own pockets. It's a dangerous place to work with no OSHA regulations. 13-hour days. Forced to attend church. Curfew."
"Aimed at middle school readers, but with romance and more young adult conflicts, the novel is suitable for high school readers. The novel, set in New England in the early 1800's, illustrates the effects of the Industrial Revolution. Lyddie's family has only their farm, which is not producing enough to support the family. When Lyddie and her younger brother are hired out as servants to help pay debts, Lyddie determines she will try to reunite the family and move heaven and earth to keep ownership of their farm in the family. Her struggle as a servant, then as a millworker, and the conflicts she must solve along the way make this novel worthy as a good portrait of a time and situation in history and a story well worth discussing. Positive."
"i acually liked this book! im surprised i did becuz i usually like realistic fiction, levey dubby stories or fantasy! but i learned a LOT! it was very detailed and very good! i really liked it! we also went 2 the mills so i got a full experience!"
