"By far the best watercolor book I own and the one I most use. One of the few that addresses pigment and the only one that directly names and centers discussion on the colors most of us own.
While not a book for beginners, and not a recipe book, this is a logical, progressive explanation of why and how to make color glow. Dobie includes ample examples, tips, and ways to analyze and fix our most common mistakes. The chapters are short, and packed with information, but reward even a slow progression.
I highly suggest getting the hardcover rather than the paperback, since the colors in it are considerably sharper and clearer--both necessities in a book about color."
"Of all the books I own on color this one is by far the most informative without being too technical. It is written in a clear readable manner that is very easy to follow. It covers all the aspects of artist colors by not getting bog down with color wheels, but rather she explains more in the way of color relationships, the nature of colors and pigments.
Even though she is a water colorist, the information is this book can easily be use for any medium. It's the knowledge she imparts that anyone looking to expand their knowledge of color to improve their art will find beneficial."
"The teacher of my watercolor painting class recommended "Making Color Sing" and led the beginning painters in the class in an exercise from the book and that's all it took--I had to read the book. After borrowing it from my library, I bought a copy so that I can work my way through it instead of rushing to get it back to the library.
Besides understanding the concepts Dobie writes about, I've used several in paintings done for the class. My excitement about the effects achieved were confirmed by the reactions the paintings elicited from the teacher and my classmates.
This book combines theory and practical applications and will be a treasured reference for me."
"This is "the" book to buy if you want to study color in watercolor. I learned watercolor from a perfectionist with a genius eye for color. She required this book to use (not just read) in her class. I still refer to it years later."
