About this title: In Man for Himself, Dr. Fromm examines the confusion of modern man--who, because he lacks faith in nay principle by which life ought to be guided, becomes the helpless prey of forces within and without himself. From the broad, interdisciplinary perspective that marks Dr. Fromm's distinguished oeuvre, he shows that psychology cannot divorce itself ...

"Not about ethics really
Man can adapt himself almost to any cultural conditions, but in so far as these are contradictory to his nature they are likely to cause mental disturbances. So, rather than existing for some external authorities' purposes, man should exist for himself. He should be able to develop his capacities and to become what he potentially is, in harmony with his universal existence.
Sure, there must be truth to that! -But I think this book was very dry on the ethics' side. "If man is to have confidence in values, he must know himself." But Fromm's views here on human character probably won't provide much help in it. I liked the Epicurus' saying, though, that "While every pleasure is in itself good, not all pleasures are to be chosen, since some of them cause annoyances greater than the pleasure itself.""
