"The Mezentian Gate has seven books, but only the first and last were written. A few of the chapters of the other books were written, but all we have for most chapters are brief sketches of what Eddison intended for them. He wrote these synopses when he realized that the work would likely be published unfinished after his death. They are pale compared to his real writing but still vivid enough to give the feel of reading the novel that should have been.
After A Fish Dinner in Memison, it's bracing to find him writing with much more action. The outline suggests this would have been a masterpiece, with about the right amount of philosophical excursions mixed in with the terrific plot."
