About this title: See, the West Coast columnist for "Publisher's Weekly," spent five years collecting the details of her family's history. She interviewed close to 100 relatives, and researched documents at the National Archives, Immigration Offices, and from personal collections in order to accurately present the story of her Chinese-American origins.

"Very fascinating history of the Chinese-American experience. Lisa See's ancestry includes a Caucasian grandmother who married a Chinese man in the early 1900s shocking her family and society. This is the story of their lives making their way in Los Angeles as owners of a very successful import business. Well worth the read!"
"This was my introduction to Lisa See, an affair that is enduring and endearing. My own Los Angeles roots, if you can call the San Fernando Valley "Los Angeles", led me on odyssey through familiar places with a whole new perspective. I read it by accident, it being on my daughter's reading list for a college class and handy on the bookshelf. Well, what a gold-mine I've discovered through this chance encounter. Ironically, my daughter never read the book. She missed a gem."
"My family history is so boring compared to this. This was so fascinating and really gave me a better appreciation for the immigrants coming to this country - especially the Chinese. I appreciate Chinese restaurants so much more now! It was what they had to do to survive! A really great book..."
"No other book on Chinese-American experience had interested me until now. While there is no similarity between my family's American integration and the author's, it was fascinating to read about the endurance of the same South Chinese customs and about life from the Chinese immigrant's perspective in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The only downside to the tale was my lack of sympathy for the first generation children who lived far too extravagantly and immodestly in spite of their work ethic. The legend and tales of Gold Mountain endure even today and this story is well told."
