"This book leaves you with more questions than answers but it does not leave your mind. How do we remember the past and how, in remembering do we deal with our traumas? Ishiguro carefully navigates the world of memories, some suppressed and some incompletely articulated with a mastery that foreshadows "The Remains of the Day". Themes of sorrow and regret are deftly sketched but never once does he say too much or force a perception on the reader. I believe he is an author that lets his characters speak for themselves. sometimes I almost want more clarification but then .. a pale view of a distant object is sometimes more intriguing than a detailed drawing."
"Another exquisite novel from Ishiguro. This one is definitely a lot more macabre than his other novels (though not in the slimy, gratuitously sinister way that you get with Ian McEwan). I think the only difference in terms of quality; I felt like this book had a slightly 'unfinished' feel that I didn't get with his novels: it wasn't quite as refined. Nevertheless, this is really a fantastic book and as a debut novel pretty impressive."
"I bought this after seeing it mentioned in a Guardian guide to the "Top 10 Ghost Stories" - also knowing the author Ishiguro after enjoying 'Never Let Me Go.' It's not a ghost story as such, but like NLMG it gives you that slightly chilling, uneasy feeling that something is terribly wrong under all the gentle nostalgia. Took me a bit of secondary reading and a second reading to understand who Sachiko might be, which actually made the second read a lot more thought-provoking than the first. I'm definitely going to get more of Ishiguro's books now!"
"I need a WTH folder in my books... I love Ishiguro's "Remains of the Day" and I love his style - it's kind of dreamy, peaceful, descriptive, humane. This story is about loss and moving on, memory and it's shortcomings, family relationships, and change where modernity is replacing tradition. But, it has a "Fight Club" factor to it - that's the best way I can describe it. At the end, I'm still musing over where the narrator's memories intersect and what was her and what was her friend that she was remembering. Or, was there a friend? Hmmm. Maybe it's not that complex, but it seemed so to me. I did enjoy it, though. There are aspects of how life went on after the bomb was dropped on Nagasaki that I found wrenching, but also fascinating."
