"This is the ultimate in the basics of pen and ink renderings. It covers the complete spectrum of pen and ink from the basic drawing materials, thoughts on light and shade, using photographs to assist in not only the quick representation of the object but for detail work to complete the drawing. It is an older book, originally published in 1928 but as with most art the basics are the best. There are several chapters of note with regards to architectural problems and renderings of entire buildings. There is a small section on the use of color but the strong point of pen and ink is the impact of the black and white and the clarity you are able to acheive with the medium. If you were to use this book as a primer or for the accomplished artist you could not buy a better book if it is available. My original copy was a hand me down from a teacher but I have buy a newer version or reprint as the binding is coming apart. The only other books I would get for this medium are "The Pen & Ink Book" by Jos. A. Smith published in 1992 which is a good book for a more detailed look at a more modern aspect of the pen and ink medium. Another book would be the biography published on Hirschfield which dwells primarily on his caricature and entertainment related line drawing in pen and ink."
"Very good collection of reference material for the hatching, great samples from various masters, some solid instructions on composition and techniques."
"This one looks like a great overview of materials and techniques for doing pen and ink drawings, or architectural drawings. I had to take it back before I finished reading the whole book, but my library has it, so it will be there as a handy reference."
"Some of the old art instruction books are still the best reference. Lovely basic techniques & lots of beautiful examples of pen an ink drawing from masters like Aubrey Beardsley, James Montgomery Flagg, Charles Dana Gibson etc..."
