"I am writing this review as part of a project for my college preparatory English class. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is a twentieth century play based off of one of Shakespeare's most famous sixteenth century plays titled Hamlet. This comical, yet modern dramatic play tells the story of two friends and the enthralling journey they experience. The names Rosencrantz and Guildenstern should ring a bell since they are two minor characters in Shakespeare's play Hamlet. Tom Stoppard, however, decided to make Rosencrantz and Guildenstern the two main characters in his play. You receive a completely different perspective and point of view from these two characters when you view their side of the story. Tom Stoppard also uses many of the same characters, scenes, and events from Hamlet in this play. However, you see completely different personalities of the characters such as King Claudius, Queen Gertrude, Polonius, and the players. As you read this play, you see how Rosencrantz and Guildenstern act when they are "on stage" and when they are behind the scenes and not needed. I would highly recommend this play to any person who enjoys various forms of theater and acting or anyone that is thinking about partaking in any theatrical activity. This play uses many genres and forms of theater to appeal to various groups of readers. Such genres and forms of theater include comedy, tragedy, absurdity, and drama. I would also highly recommend this book to English and reading teachers who have just completed Hamlet with their class. This is certainly one of my most favorite plays that I have read."
"My high school put on this play 4 years ago and I was on tech crew so I spent everyday after school with props, set construction, and painting scenery. I'll never forget sitting in that tall wagon painting a waterfall! Everyday after school for a week I was in that thing!-but the point is that I got to overhear the actors reharsing their lines and I'll never forget the quickness of the lines and the tongue twist quality of the play. There was also an epic pirate sword fight between my friend Alex and Matt(rosencrantz) in the aud. Wow. That was high school. I was there behind the scenes but I never went to see the play put on. I still regret that.I've been wanting to read it for awhile just because the curiosity built up by my not seeing it performed. There is a huge difference between what we read and what we see. If anyone has a chance to see it-Go. The play is so original and I bet Shakespeare himself would approve. - and horray to false beards and sidies! Oh and remember: Player: Pirates can happen to anyone."
"A wild and hilarious ride from Stoppard through Rosencrantz and Guilderstern's tragic five seconds of fictional fame. Once you've read the book, go see the movie. With Gary Oldman, Tim Roth and Richard Dreyfuss, it's a great adaptation of an amazing play."
"This play is absolutely hilarious. It's dry, subtle, and intelligent humor appeals exactly to my tastes. It also offers some very interesting discussion about death. What is it? How does one take his own death? Is an acted death more or less convincing than a real one? All good question set against the extremely tragic story of Shakespeare's Hamlet (done in a rather comedic fashion). I never new anyone could turn a tragedy as good as Hamlet into a comedy so hilarious as Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead."
